Preheat oven to 425F.
Heat a heavy pot (Dutch oven) on stovetop to medium/medium-high with a dollop of olive oil in the bottom.
Brown hamburger and sausage (two large links, slit the casing and dump out the filling) in the oil for about five to ten minutes, breaking the meat down to fine crumbles while browning.
Add fine-diced garlic, peppers, celery, and carrots along with sliced mushrooms. Stir thoroughly for a minute, then cover the pot and allow veggies to steam for about five minutes.
Remove lid, stir mixture and scrape the bottom, then add oregano, chili flake, and tomato paste (without water). Stir and cook until mixture is red-orange and smells spicy.
Stir in a tablespoon of either beef bouillon (eg Better Than Bouillon) or fish sauce, along with the 28oz can of crushed tomatoes and a canful of tap water. Add a couple of teaspoons of salt, a couple teaspoons of sugar, stir, and bring up to a medium simmer.
Once simmering, add fresh chopped basil, then submerge one package of dried spaghetti noodles broken in half into the sauce. Simmer for roughly one minute, until noodles just begin to soften.
Stir noodles gently to submerge once more, then move the pot from stovetop to the preheated 425F oven. Once in oven, stir every 5-6 minutes; total bake time should be roughly 16-18m.
(Note: if you don't want to use the oven, it's okay to simply finish on the stovetop. Stovetop will typically require a few minutes less than the oven; being testing noodles for doneness at around 12m in.)
After noodles are cooked to taste, remove pot from oven, grate about half a cup of fresh Parmesan directly into the pot, and serve.
